Finally, after so many crap novels by indie authors I've bought, downloaded, read, and regretted, I finally struck gold. The 4 and 5 star ratings on this one are, for once, accurate. This is a very original and captivating tale about a young girl who realizes she is an alien. No spoilers, so I'll stop right there. Very minor complaints: the pacing is pretty swift, with not too much description (e.g., of settings), not too much reflection and breathing space between action scenes, and not quite enough character development. But the concept and the plot itself carry the day. I bought Part 2 immediately upon finishing Part 1. You will too, trust me. VERY hard to put down.Product details

I chose this book as my mom recommended that I have a look at the website. After reading the reviews, I decided to buy the ebook. I know my son will enjoy reading Essentia too. Not sure what I would have done in Maya's position. I enjoy the communication that John and Maya have with each other. Social media is hard enough let alone when your young child tells you that they are an alien. I am very much looking forward to the next instalment!
This was very cute. This book really hit home for me because I have two step kids who are both Geniuses. You haven't argued until you've argued with a pre teen genius with a big mouth!!
it's an interesting idea (of a little girl who may actually be an alien), but the part about how to improve/fix the world seemed incredibly naive.
For example, the aliens' word of advice to "bad people" -- paraphrasing "If you're a bad person, stop being a bad person". Frankly, I thought this was pretty goofy. And, "stop being selfish". "Stop being mean to each other". So I guess all we have to do is tell the Al-Quaeda terrorists, "Stop being a terrorist" and "Stop killing innocent people", and we're all set. Who knew it could be so easy ?
Also, it comes off as preachy and off-putting to be told these incredibly naive aphorisms as if they're new and profound revelations.
These issues seriously erode the credibility and believability of the underlying story.
My advice to the author is to stay away from preaching and posing overly simplistic solutions to what are fairly complex issues.
I just finished reading Essentia, and I am so anxious to read the next part! G.M. Whitley has an effortless eloquence in the way she tells a story. The details are so vivid and awe inspiring that you can't help but be entranced. This is such a thoughtful and clever piece of literature, I only wonder whether G.M. Herself is not Essentia attempting to deliver her message! LOVED it!! D.M. Alvis
This is the story of Lucy Baker who at the age of five declares that she is an alien. If you enjoy a great story that doesn't involve blowing up stuff and makes you think you'll enjoy this book.
What would YOU do if your kid revealed himself to be an alien? The premise of this short story is a great one, the reaction of a family to their exceptional daughter's claims. The characters are clearly written and act/react in real manners. The ending left me wanting more and anxious for the next installment. This reviewer did find that the desires of the Essentia for humanity are a bit too goody-goody to be plausible. Belief in the 'essential' goodness of mankind is a purely liberal trait and, even if people wanted to, inherent, deep change for the better without Christ is an impossibility due to humanity's fallen nature as sinners.
The beginning of the book reads a little like a mommy-blog - interesting for those of us who like details of child rearing, but not entirely captivating. But as the story developed, I found myself starting to form strong opinions on the claims of this fictional little girl. The author occasionally throws in political or philosophical teasers that push readers out of their comfort zones. And the ending was really good. Like, can't wait to see what happens next, good. Overall, an enjoyable, quick read.
